How much should you tip in South Africa?

Ten percent of the bill is the standard restaurant tip in South Africa. It is not a minimum you leave before someone judges you, and it is not what you leave when service was poor, it is the normal amount for an ordinary, decent meal out. Service that was noticeably better than that is usually rewarded with something closer to 15 percent. Calculators built for the United States default to 15 to 20 percent because that is the norm there, not here, and using one of those by habit ends up over tipping by a wide margin.

Is the service charge already included?

Before adding anything, check the bottom of the bill for a line already labeled service charge or gratuity. Some restaurants, particularly for bigger tables, add this automatically, and tipping again on top of it means paying for the same thing twice. If that line is there, it is your tip. Only add more on top of it if the service genuinely went beyond what it covers.

Car guards and petrol attendants

South Africa has two tipping situations most international guides never mention. Car guards, the informal attendants found in most shopping centre and street parking areas, are tipped in cash when you get back to your car. Petrol stations are staffed rather than self-service almost everywhere in the country, so the attendant who pumps your fuel, and checks your oil, water or tyres if you ask, is customarily tipped a small cash amount too.

Tipping in large groups

Bills for bigger tables are the ones most likely to already include an automatic service charge, precisely because relying on everyone to tip fairly gets harder as the group grows. Check for that line before assuming nothing has been added. If nothing is there, the same 10 percent guideline still applies regardless of how many people are at the table.

Cash or card?

Where you have the choice, cash is the more reliable way to tip in South Africa. A cash tip reaches the person who served you directly. A tip added to a card payment usually goes into a shared pool first, and depending on how the venue handles payouts, staff may only see that money at the end of the week or month rather than the same day.
